A pesar del avance de la odontología, de los innovadores programas de salud y de los esfuerzos del personal odontológico
existe una gran prevalencia de enfermedad bucal no cubierta y el gasto que esta ocasiona va en crecimiento. En el presente
la oferta de servicios de salud bucal necesita ser mejorada. La incorporación de los higienistas dentales como miembros
esenciales del equipo de atención primaria de la salud pueden contribuir a mejorar los resultados en términos de cobertura
costo efectiva, este artículo proporciona definiciones de varios países así como de los estados Unidos de Norte América,
describe sus programas educativos, sus funciones y la contribución que estos hacen en el equipo de salud.
