Effects of Covid 19 Pandemic on Dental Education in
Dental Colleges of Various Universities in India

COVID-19 a rapid, sudden infection which has cut across all borders, boundaries because of which lock-
downs were imposed brought the entire world to a standstill. Current pandemic affected various strata
of the society right from the vegetable venders to even high-rise corporates. The nature of virus like its
transmission through aerosol, saliva has posed a great threat to the dentists, thus the entire spectrum of
dental fraternity has been affected. Government imposed lockdowns, social distancing became manda-
tory and need of the hour which affected face to face contact such as teaching and training programmes,
limited access to clinical learning in dentistry.
Opportunities for the students which caused them to have a cloud of uncertainty looming over their
heads. The suddenness of this situation and the unpreparedness of the world is constantly woggling the
students mind with various questions. The thought of future consequences is definitely dampening the
spirit of young dental generation. Not only the students, this pandemic even affected their parents. Pa-
rents feared sending their wards to colleges and hospitals for any emergency services too. The negative
aura of COVID-19 made these parents scared for their children’s life. This all led to a total breakdown
of the dental education system. Universities and colleges tried their level best to maintain an open con-
versation with parents and students regarding the gravity of the current situation. Dental colleges and
universities strived hard to provide online classes to prevent students from loosing the momentum of the
education. At this time when its most needed institutes and dental community have come together to help
students by conducting free webinars. Students also got free access to some of the journals. Whatsapp ,
telegram groups are being created where soft copies of textbooks are being shared so that students can
get fullest benefit. However, as clinics were shut for safety, students lost out on learning the clinical work.
Dentistry is a field which is known for its practical and hand work. Its art which requires immense
practical experience. But the lockdown brought a stop to this all. Students are just learning things online
and loss of clinical practice is definitely a rock in the path to become a confident and a good dentist.
Many final year students were stuck as practical exams were difficult to conduct. The patients for the
same are rightfully scared to enter any hospitals. These students’ future endeavours are clogged due to
this. Colleges and universities were also bogged down by this question on exam conduction. They cannot
clear students without practical examination as it is a key to a good dentist. This dilemma of both colleges
