PRESENCE OF MUCOUS RETENTION CYSTS IN THE MAXILLARY SINUS, CUENCA - ECUADOR, 2016-2017

Aim:To determine the prevalence of mucosal retention cysts at the level of the maxillary sinuses by means of the analysis of digital panoramic radiographs obtained and filed at the Radiological Center of the Catholic University of Cuenca in the period 2016-2017. Material and Methods: This is a descriptive, observational, transverse, retrospective study. We evaluated 4279 digital panoramic radiographs. The possible relationship between the presence of mucosal retention cysts and the decade of life was established through the Pearson Chi Square test. Results: Out of a total of 4279 radiographs analyzed, 4.4% (n=189) showed the presence of mucosal retention cysts in the maxillary sinuses. These cysts occurred more frequently in male patients (56.6%), and in the third decade of life with a percentage of 51%. In addition, cysts were detected at the floor of the maxillary sinus in 73.56% of cases. Conclusion: A low prevalence of mucosal retention cysts was evidenced, predominating in individuals whose ages ranged from the third to the fourth decade of life. This prevalence was higher in male patients. The most frequent location of these cysts was on the floor of the maxillary sinus.
