Asociación entre enfermedad periodontal y enfermedad cardiovascular.

Resumen

La enfermedad periodontal y los trastornos sistémicos continúan siendo un problema de salud pública a nivel mundial. En los últimos años, varios estudios han evidenciado una asociación entre la periodontitis y las enfermedades cardiovasculares (ECV). Por lo tanto, el objetivo de la presente revisión bibliográfica es determinar la asociación entre la enfermedad periodontal y la ECV. Se realizó una revisión exhaustiva de la literatura en el idioma inglés para recopilar las publicaciones de los últimos 12 años, utilizando las bases de datos Wiley Online Library, PubMed, Google Académico, Dialnet, PMC, BVS y Medline, empleando las siguientes palabras clave: enfermedades periodontales, enfermedades cardiovasculares y periodontitis. Se seleccionaron solamente las publicaciones más relevantes, consiguiendo un total de 56 artículos. La asociación entre la periodontitis y las ECV se podría explicar por la inflamación sistémica crónica y la influencia de factores de riesgo que comparten ambas patologías, sin embargo, se necesitan de futuros estudios clínicos para poder establecer una relación concreta entre las dos enfermedades.
