Relationship between periodontal disease and osteoporosis

Periodontal disease and osteoporosis are two inflammatory diseases resulting from multiple factors involving bone resorption. Among these are age, smoking, alcohol consumption, and vitamin D and calcium deficiency. For the clinical dental diagnosis of these diseases, a study must be conducted through panoramic radiographs, periapical radiographs, and computed tomography. For an accurate diagnosis, bone mineral analysis of the femoral neck and spine is performed using dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), where a bone mineral density T-score of <-2.5 standard deviations or below indicates a positive result for osteoporosis. This literature review aims to determine the relationship between periodontal disease and osteoporosis. A literature review was conducted in English and Spanish using databases such as PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, SciELO, and Dialnet, employing the following keywords: osteoporosis, periodontitis, mineral density, postmenopausal osteoporosis, and bisphosphonates. Finally, 32 articles were obtained.
