The present literary review analyzes whether the abuse of antibiotics and the resulting development of microbial resistances constitutes the reality of our present times or if we live in the "happy" world advertising and commercials would make us believe. An initial internet cluster search was made and, based on the results obtained, additional subsequent searches were performed according to the snowball principle. The use of antibiotics has increased in recent decades. In the USA, 80% of these substances are used for agriculture and animal production, especially for prophylactic purposes and as growth promoters. Using a few examples, it can be verified that there is no true separation between antibiotics for veterinary use and
those for human use. In several international studies (Europe, North America, Brazil), multiresistant bacteria have been found in both in farm animals and exposed persons. The European Union’s prohibition of antibiotics for prophylactic purposes and growth promotion in animal husbandry did not bring about satisfactory results. The problem of antibiotics in food products and the soil is described. Results of local studies on food contamination with antibiotics and resistant germs are reported. The big pharmaceutical companies are abandoning the development of new antibiotics for not being sufficiently attractive
economic models. The indiscriminate use of "reserve antibiotics" in animal production is criticized. Antibiotic use in dentistry is evaluated. The list of recommendations issued by the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) is presented and that list is further enhanced by several.
