Most frequent oral pathologies in pregnant women - Literature review

The hormonal changes experienced by women during pregnancy can harm their oral health, triggering a series of changes at the gingival level, which would lead to the appearance of oral pathologies. The objective of this review is to determine the main oral pathologies that arise in pregnant women. An online systematic review was conducted in the Scielo, PubMed, Google Scholar and Elsevier databases searching for case studies, clinical trials, meta-analyses, systematic reviews and reviews of the literature published in the last 6 years, using as keywords: "oral pathologies", "pregnant women", "caries", "gingivitis" and their equivalents in English, combined in the search strings with the Boolean connectors AND and OR. A total of 59 articles were obtained, after reading and exclusion, the selection yielded 24 articles considered sufficient to meet the established objectives. The literature reports an evident majority prevalence of oral pathologies such as caries, periodontal disease, gingivitis, pregnancy granuloma and dental erosion. Caries and gingivitis were the main oral pathologies that arose in pregnant women.
