Abstract

Tooth sensitivity is a common symptom in dental practice. The percentage of the affected adult population varies between 40 and 60%, being frequently found in vestibular surfaces of canines and premolars. There are several methods to treat dental hypersensitivity, among them, the use of nanotechnology has allowed to improve the properties of dental materials. Objective: To evaluate the effect of 20% hydroxyapatite nanoparticles in dentifrices for occlusion of dentinal tubules. Materials and Methods: 40 dentin disks were used, divided into 4 groups (n=10), Group A control; Group B with 20% nanohydroxyapatite and 356 nm particle; Group C 20% and particle 420 nm; Group D 20% and particle 1817nm. The dentin disks were polished with disks (3M™ Sof-Lex) to have a homogeneous surface. The smear layer was removed with 10% citric acid for 120 seconds. Each group was brushed (Oral B Vitality™) at 7600 rpm with 0.2 g of dentifrice containing nanohydroxyapatite particles for 2 min. twice a day for 7 days. The roughness test was carried out with the Contact Profilometer Bruker Dektak XT, with a scanning area of 3.5 linear μm in 120 seconds. The samples were analyzed with the Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) Tescan Mira 3. Results: The roughness values in groups B, C, D decreased compared to the control group. Conclusions: The size of nanohydroxyapatite particles have a significant reduction in occlusion of dentinal tubules.
