Abstract

Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) is defined as a disorder representing either total airflow obstruction (apnea) or partial airway obstruction (hypopnea) during sleep. The objective of this literature review was to analyze significant information about maxillary mandibular advancement surgery (MMA) as an option in treating OSAS. In which online databases such as Medline, PubMed, Scielo, ElSevier, Healey Library, and Web of Science; among others, were queried to identify updated articles regardless of language, as well as a manual search. Keywords were selected as the inclusion criteria: "Obstructive Sleep Apnea”, "Orthognathic Surgical Procedures”, "Mandibular Advancement” and "Occlusal Devices” in multiple combinations using boolean operators OR, AND, and NOT, to retrieve relevant references to be selected, literature review studies, case reports, clinical trials, and cohort studies were considered, A total of 1583 articles were reviewed, of which only 41 met the inclusion criteria, 21 were written in Spanish and 20 in English. The maxillomandibular advancement surgery is one of the best treatment alternatives for OSAS, it has an average success rate in the short and long term, around 98.8%, it significantly reduces episodes of apnea and hypopnea during sleeping time, improving the quality of life of patients undergoing treatment.
