The Hypothalamic Pituitary Adrenal Axis and its Influence on Temporomandibular Disorders

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are characterized by presenting alterations in the temporomandibular joint, such as pain, morphological changes and functional limitations, among others. When trauma, psychosocial or hormonal disturbances occur, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activates a cascade of reactions that leads to increased cortisol secretion by the adrenal glands. This results in increased production of inflammatory cells in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Therefore, it is considered that one of the etiological factors of TMD is the prolonged increase in cortisol.
