The purpose of this study was to evaluate how thyme, at different concentrations, affects the bacteria Porphyromonas gingivalis and Enterococcus faecalis. The method that was developed was using an approach that deals with the quantification of data, being exploratory in nature, quasi-experimental and performed outside of a living organism (in vitro).
A sample composed of the determined bacteria (Porphyromonas gingivalis ATCC 25175 and Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212), which were obtained from a culture performed on blood agar from lamb, was purposely chosen. These samples were subjected to different concentrations of thyme essential oil, which are 25%, 50% and 100%; these were applied separately with a 2% chlorhexidine solution. The results were observed at three time marks; at 24h, 48h and 72h. The effect obtained was that thyme presented its bactericidal antimicrobial effect, however, it was less effective in comparison with chlorhexidine, since the latter proved to be maximally bactericidal. Thyme at 50% concentration at 72 hours was more effective than other combinations. Therefore, thyme was consistently, but less effective than 2%
