Abstract

Facial asymmetry is characterized by the presence of a disharmony between both sides of the face. They manifest more commonly in the lower third of the face (jaw and chin), due to the fact that they present a greater support area and longer growth periods.

Objective: The objective of this review is to identify the main acquired bone pathologies that manifest mandibular asymmetry, highlight the aspects that the orthodontist must take into account, their effects on treatment and also point out some therapeutic options.

Method: A PubMed search was performed from the year 2000 onwards. Articles in English and Spanish that could be obtained in full format were selected.

Results: The information obtained was classified into 5 sections (etiology and classification, clinical manifestations, clinical implications, diagnosis and treatment).

Conclusions: The results obtained in this research allow us to obtain a guide for decision-making in clinical practice and also to differentiate the possible pathologies involved in the manifestation of mandibular asymmetry.

Keywords: facial asymmetry, mandibular asymmetry, skeletal, humans, diagnosis.
